I ended up sitting with a patient from the very get go today. He'd been pretty difficult and out-of-it the night before, so they decided he needed a sitter this morning. Of course, he was fine by the time I came on the scene, but I sat with him anyway. His nurse is the one with whom I have the least love shared. Naturally. That dragged on interminably, it seemed, until she finally transferrd her other patient upstairs. I had "breaks" from him at breakfast and lunch, dealing with another one of the patients, who is often sexually inappropriate with the female nurses, and who wanted to be fed, claiming his hands shake too badly (which is horseshit)...so the nurse came and got me. I. Do. Not. Play. That. Game. If you are able, you can feed yourself. And I will make you aware of that...politely. But inexorably. "Your fine motor skills won't improve unless you use them." Don't worry about spilling...everything is washable." With just enough firmness backing it all up to make people like him rethink their position. LOL. Then there were other patients to sit with here and there, while their nurses did a few things. Patients to transfer or take for tests (like a visit to Angio 20 minutes before the end of shift...grrrr). Various forms of business. All in all, it was a frustrating and tiring workday.
I took in some pastries I had made, practicing for the Pillsbury Bake-Off, and they were well-liked by the people who tried them. I also managed to get off the floor for lunch, which was much-needed. And I got a call from Nurses' Union fellow who said that my name had been pulled in a drawing they had, and I had won an iPod Classic 120GB Silver, which he then came up and gave me. I didn't even know there was a drawing, but I am glad there was...lol.
Willem de Thouars is an amazing martial artist, who has been practicing Indochinese and Indonesian martial arts for longer than I have been alive. There was an ad for a seminar in Portland in April that he would be teaching, so I emailed the man who was sponsoring him. I heard back from him this afternoon. That ad is a couple of years old. He is, however, Willem's rep for the Pacific NW, and he is holding a seminar himself tomorrow, from 10AM to 4PM. Of course, I am working. I must admit to feeling a certain temptation...
Then there were the Xmas gifts that finally arrived from my parents. Our son is happy with the books and pile of DVD's that he got, but Gina's gifts were a mixed bag. A cross stitch in a style she doesn't care for and a box of lotion and other items she didn't care for (nor do I blame her), but a $50 gift card that she will enjoy. I received a pair of jeans (regular fit instead of the relaxed fit I requested...I need to try them on and see if they'll fit...unlikely), three bottles of different hot sauces, and...a $50 gift card to Fungi Perfecti, which is one of the better gifts they've given me in years. I see a lot of fresh mushrooms in my future...yum.
So...what a mixed bag this day has been. I am tired, and need to hit the sack in a few minutes.
