I worked yesterday. It started slow, but after a nice lunch...we got hammered. I had been up way to late the night before, working on the Pillsbury Bakeoff entry, so by the time I got home I was exhausted. Then, right about the time I should have been going to bed, I ended up IM'ing with a long ago friend that I hadn't spoken to in years. We had a nice conversation, starting to catch up what's been going on in our lives all this time. She might come out to visit us sometime soon. We're going to try and catch up some more on Wednesday or Thursday.
It was supposed to be my short (8 hour) shift today, but one of the admin folks in ICU had indicated that I should stay for a class @ 4PM this afternoon, and do a 12. Sigh. Starting with morning report, things did not bode well. The doctors wanted to do 10 surgeries(!!!), including a heart and a liver transplant, and there was an ER admit. We only had 4 empty beds. There weren't very many patients well enough to be transferred upstairs. Not good. Not at all.
Thankfully, we hit fast and hard, and between 9:15AM and 10:45AM, we had transferred five patients up to the 9th floor, four of them to Silver Dragon's floor. She picked the right day to be off. As I took them three of the four, I was getting some threatening comments. On the other hand, one of the nurses asked if I happened to have one of Gina's brownies in my pockets, as the one she had awhile back was one of the best brownies she's ever tasted! Lol. The next piece of good news was that our charge nurse stuck to her guns and got the docs to postpone three surgeries. And the admin gal didn't make it in today, the class was cancelled. By lunch time, we had nurses waiting for patients to trickle in, helping the other nurses out of boredom.
I got cut loose on time for my 8, leaving the ICU right at 1PM on the dot! Much to Gina's pleasant surprise and happiness. And mine. I am tired.
Its been an afternoon for R&R. I have the next two days off and there will be plenty of time for business and industry then. We had leftovers for lunch - chicken and dumplings (me) and last night's oh-so-tasty cheesy potato soup (Gina). Gina had made it (bless her!) and used the last of the Krakow sausage in it. Yummy comfort food. Quesadillas for dinner. Easy is good. There will be more Pillsbury competition cooking while I'm off. Which generates happy coworkers, since there will be extras (and they are taste testers...lol). Getting some reading in, James Rollins' The Judas Strain. I enjoy his books...his later ones always have odd and interesting bits of info in them.
And that is where we are at. Looking forward to not getting up at 0330 tomorrow...

Yeah, Mom liked those brownies. So did I; a little too much I think.
The comment came from...I don't remember her name...a younger blond nurse. But I'm glad you liked 'em.
